The Lord Raises Up Deliverers
Judges 3:7 - 31
Introduction
The main role of the Judges is to deliver the people of Israel from oppression by the enemy
(Judges 2:16, 3:9). Their plight is due to their forgetting God and incurring His anger, and thus the chastisement. Yet every time Israel cries out to the Lord, He responds by raising up a deliverer.
Othniel: The Model Judge (vv. 7 - 11)
Othniel is the Judge who delivered Israel from the rule of the King of Aram, Cushan-Rishathaim. Othniel is a Model Judge who fulfills the standards expected of God’s chosen deliverer. No character flaw or dubious act is mentioned about Othniel. He fulfills his role
successfully as one who has the Spirit of God upon him (vv. 9-10). The story of Othniel gives a fitting picture of the cycle of sin, chastisement, and then deliverance by a judge whom God raises and empowers
